About Gerald
Baxter Health is proud to welcome Gerald Belopolsky, MD, to the Baxter Health Pulmonology Clinic. Dr. Belopolsky will practice pulmonary and critical care medicine along with Dr. Brian Malte and is now accepting new patients.
Pulmonary and critical care medicine is the specialty focused on the lungs, breathing, and the care of patients who are seriously ill, often in an intensive care unit. It is work that demands both deep knowledge and steady judgment, because the patients are often fighting for their lives and the decisions made on their behalf can change everything. Dr. Belopolsky has been doing this work for more than 30 years.
Most recently, Dr. Belopolsky served as a pulmonary and critical care physician at UPMC Altoona in Pennsylvania, part of one of the country's largest health systems. Before that, he spent a decade on the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a nationally-recognized academic medical center, where he cared for complex patients and helped train physicians who are now practicing across the country. His time at UAB was not spent behind a desk. It was spent at the bedside, managing difficult cases and sharing hard-won knowledge with the next generation of doctors.
Dr. Belopolsky brings particular skill in diagnosing and treating lung disease, managing patients on breathing machines, and performing advanced procedures to evaluate and treat conditions of the airways and lungs. He also has extensive experience in sleep medicine, helping patients whose quality of life is affected by disorders like sleep apnea. His range of expertise means that patients with complicated respiratory conditions can receive thorough, coordinated care close to home.
Lung cancer diagnosis and treatment has been a particular focus throughout his career. He has spoken at national physician education conferences on the topic and has worked to stay at the forefront of a field where early detection and precise treatment can make the difference between a good outcome and a devastating one.
Dr. Belopolsky earned his medical degree from Ukraine National Medical University in Kiev and completed his Internal Medicine residency at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he served as Chief Fellow. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine, and critical care.
