The COVID-19 vaccine is an important tool in ending the COVID-19 pandemic. Wearing masks and social distancing help reduce your chance of being exposed to the virus or spreading it to others, but these measures are not enough. Vaccines will work with your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed. The combination of getting vaccinated and following CDC recommendations to protect yourself and others will offer the best protection from COVID-19.

Important facts about the COVID-19 vaccine:

  • Vaccines won’t end the pandemic; other protections will continue. Please continue to cover your mouth and nose with a mask when around others, stay at least 6 feet away from others, avoid crowds, and wash your hands often.
  • No vaccine is 100% effective, but this will give us the best COVID-19 protection.
  • On August 23, 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the initial 2-dose Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for those aged 16 years and older.
  • And on October 29, 2021, the FDA authorized the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for the prevention of COVID-19 to include children 5 through 11 years of age.
  • Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) continues for the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine for those aged 12-15 years as well as for Moderna and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen vaccines.
  • Pfizer-BioNTech is a two dose shot, given 3 weeks apart, for people aged 12 and older.
  • Moderna are two shots, given 4 weeks apart, for people aged 18 and older.
  • Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen is a one dose shot for people aged 18 and older.
  • You are full vaccinated 2 weeks after your second shot of Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna and your only shot of Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen.
  • COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost to the patient.
  • After COVID-19 vaccination, you may have some side effects of flu-like symptoms. This is a normal sign that your body is building protection.
